In 2026, the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence. The words proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence—“All men are created equal”—have endured through wars, social conflicts, economic crises, and remarkable achievements. While America is far from perfect, these ideals continue to inspire generations to strive toward a more just and free society.

As an immigrant from East Asia, I have had the privilege of seeing America from two perspectives: as an outsider who once dreamed of this country and as a resident who has experienced its strengths and shortcomings firsthand. Like every nation, the United States has its imperfections. Political polarization, economic inequality, and social challenges remain. Yet despite these realities, America possesses enduring qualities that continue to attract millions of people seeking opportunity, freedom, and a better future.

As the United States commemorates its 250th birthday, I would like to share the ten qualities I appreciate most about this remarkable nation.

1. America Gives People a Second Chance

One of America’s greatest strengths is its belief that people deserve another opportunity. Here, failure is often viewed not as a permanent defeat but as a valuable lesson. Entrepreneurs who have gone bankrupt often launch successful new businesses. Adults return to college after retirement, and many people begin entirely new careers in their fifties or sixties. Instead of asking, “Why did you fail?” Americans often ask, “What did you learn?”

2. Freedom Is More Than a Principle—It Is a Way of Life

Freedom is woven into everyday American life. People openly express different political opinions, practice different religions, pursue diverse careers, and live according to their own values. Although disagreements can be intense, the fundamental belief that individuals should have the freedom to make their own choices remains one of America’s defining characteristics.

3. Merit Often Matters More Than Background

For immigrants, this may be one of America’s greatest promises. While no society is completely free from prejudice, talent, hard work, and achievement often open doors that might otherwise remain closed. A person’s accent, birthplace, or family background does not necessarily determine his or her future. This belief gives newcomers hope and motivation to succeed.

4. America Provides an Extraordinary Environment for Education and Research

The world’s brightest students and scholars continue to gather at American universities. Laboratories, classrooms, and research centers bring together people from every continent to exchange ideas freely. Innovation thrives because curiosity is encouraged, questions are welcomed, and failure is considered part of the learning process. This intellectual openness has fueled many of the world’s scientific and technological breakthroughs.

5. Volunteerism Strengthens Communities

One of the most inspiring aspects of American society is its strong tradition of volunteer service. Churches, schools, hospitals, libraries, and nonprofit organizations rely on countless citizens who generously donate their time and talents. This culture of giving demonstrates that a healthy society depends not only on government but also on compassionate citizens who care about their neighbors.

6. Respect for Law and Institutions Creates Stability

No legal system is flawless, yet Americans generally seek to resolve conflicts through established laws and institutions rather than through personal influence or informal connections. Confidence in legal processes and constitutional principles provides an important foundation for social stability and public trust.

7. Diversity Creates Innovation

America’s diversity is one of its greatest competitive advantages. Walking down a single street, one may find Korean, Mexican, Indian, Italian, and Middle Eastern restaurants standing side by side. Different cultures interact daily, exchanging ideas, traditions, and perspectives. This multicultural environment enriches not only cuisine and the arts but also business, science, and technological innovation.

8. Creativity and Entrepreneurship Are Celebrated

America encourages people to think differently. Innovative ideas are often judged by their potential rather than by the age, social status, or background of the person presenting them. The entrepreneurial spirit that transformed Silicon Valley into a global center of innovation reflects a national culture that rewards creativity, calculated risk-taking, and perseverance.

9. Strong Local Communities Enrich Everyday Life

Public libraries, parks, museums, schools, and community organizations play an essential role in American society. Public libraries, in particular, offer far more than books—they provide educational programs, career assistance, language classes, technology resources, and cultural events for people of all ages. These institutions help immigrants integrate into their communities while strengthening civic life for everyone.

10. America Continuously Strives to Improve Itself

Perhaps America’s greatest strength is not perfection but its willingness to confront its own shortcomings. Throughout its history, the nation has wrestled with slavery, civil rights, economic crises, and countless other challenges. Progress has often been difficult and incomplete, yet Americans continue to debate, vote, research, advocate, and work toward meaningful reform. This remarkable capacity for self-correction has helped sustain the nation for two and a half centuries.

Final Thoughts

Having lived in both East Asia and the United States, I have come to appreciate that no country is perfect. Every nation possesses unique strengths and faces distinct challenges. East Asian societies often demonstrate extraordinary discipline, educational achievement, and strong community values. America, meanwhile, offers a powerful combination of freedom, opportunity, diversity, and optimism.

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, I see more than the birthday of a nation. I see a continuing experiment in liberty—one that has inspired generations of dreamers, innovators, and immigrants from around the world.

For me, America has been far more than a place to live. It has been a place to grow, to learn, to contribute, and to dream. My hope is that in its next 250 years, the United States will continue to uphold the ideals of liberty, welcome people from every corner of the globe, and remain a nation where hard work, creativity, and hope can still shape one’s future.

한 이민자가 발견한 미국의 선물

2026년, 미국은 건국 250주년을 맞이했다. 1776년 독립선언서에 담긴 “모든 인간은 평등하게 창조되었다”는 문장은 수많은 시대적 도전을 겪으면서도 여전히 미국 사회를 움직이는 이상으로 남아 있다. 물론 현실의 미국은 완벽하지 않다. 정치적 갈등도 있고, 경제적 불평등도 있으며, 인종 문제도 여전히 해결해야 할 과제다. 그럼에도 불구하고 극동 아시아에서 건너온 한 이민자의 눈에는 미국이 가진 특별한 힘이 보인다. 그것은 수백 년 동안 수많은 이민자들이 이 나라를 선택한 이유이기도 하다.

내가 미국에서 살아오며 가장 크게 느낀 미국의 장점 열 가지를 소개하고 싶다.

첫째, 누구에게나 다시 시작할 기회를 준다.

미국에서는 과거보다 현재와 미래를 더 중요하게 생각한다. 실패한 사업가가 다시 창업하고, 은퇴 후 대학에 입학하며, 50세에 새로운 직업을 시작하는 사람도 흔하다. “이미 늦었다.”는 말보다 “한번 도전해 보라.”는 말을 더 자주 듣는다.

둘째, 개인의 자유를 존중한다.

사람들은 서로 다른 정치적 견해, 종교, 생활방식, 직업을 가질 수 있다. 모두가 서로를 좋아하는 것은 아니지만, 서로의 선택을 인정하려는 문화가 비교적 강하다. 다양한 생각이 공존할 수 있다는 점은 미국 사회의 가장 큰 자산 중 하나이다.

셋째, 능력이 있으면 출신을 뛰어넘을 수 있다.

억양이 다르고 피부색이 달라도 실력과 성실함으로 인정받을 기회가 있다. 물론 차별이 전혀 없는 것은 아니지만, 많은 기업과 대학은 실제 성과를 중요하게 평가한다. 이민자에게 이것은 큰 희망이다.

넷째, 세계 최고의 교육과 연구 환경이 있다.

미국 대학에는 세계 각국에서 온 학생과 교수들이 함께 연구한다. 새로운 아이디어를 자유롭게 토론하고 실패를 두려워하지 않는 분위기는 혁신의 원동력이 된다. 노벨상 수상자와 대학원생이 같은 식당에서 점심을 먹는 풍경은 미국에서는 특별한 일이 아니다.

다섯째, 자원봉사 문화가 생활 속에 자리 잡고 있다.

교회, 학교, 병원, 지역사회에서는 수많은 시민들이 자신의 시간을 기꺼이 나눈다. 돈보다 시간을 기부하는 문화는 공동체를 더욱 따뜻하게 만든다. 이러한 자발적인 봉사는 민주사회의 건강성을 보여주는 중요한 지표라고 생각한다.

여섯째, 법과 제도를 신뢰하려는 문화가 강하다.

모든 제도가 완벽한 것은 아니지만, 문제를 개인의 힘보다 제도를 통해 해결하려는 문화가 자리 잡고 있다. 법 앞에서 누구나 권리를 주장할 수 있다는 믿음은 사회 안정의 중요한 기반이다.

일곱째, 다양성이 새로운 가치를 만든다.

미국의 음식, 음악, 영화, 과학기술은 세계 여러 문화가 만나 탄생한 결과물이다. 한국 음식점 옆에 멕시코 식당이 있고, 그 옆에 인도 식당이 있는 풍경은 미국에서는 자연스럽다. 서로 다른 문화가 경쟁하면서도 동시에 서로를 풍요롭게 만든다.

여덟째, 창의성과 도전을 높이 평가한다.

새로운 아이디어가 있으면 나이나 직위보다 아이디어 자체를 먼저 들어준다. 실리콘밸리의 혁신도 결국 “왜 안 되겠는가?”라는 질문에서 시작되었다. 미국은 실패를 경험으로 받아들이는 문화가 비교적 강하기 때문에 혁신이 계속 탄생할 수 있다.

아홉째, 지역사회가 살아 있다.

도서관, 공원, 박물관, 시민단체, 학교는 단순한 시설이 아니라 주민들이 함께 배우고 교류하는 공간이다. 특히 공공도서관은 책뿐 아니라 교육 프로그램, 취업 지원, 문화행사까지 제공하며 누구에게나 열려 있다. 이러한 생활 속 공공 서비스는 이민자들에게도 큰 도움이 된다.

열째, 끊임없이 스스로를 고치려는 나라이다.

미국 역사는 완벽한 역사가 아니다. 노예제도, 인종차별, 경제적 위기 등 수많은 시행착오가 있었다. 그러나 중요한 것은 문제를 공개적으로 토론하고 개선하려는 힘이다. 언론은 비판하고, 대학은 연구하며, 시민은 토론하고, 선거를 통해 변화를 만들어 간다. 이러한 자기 수정 능력이 미국을 250년 동안 지속시킨 원동력이라고 생각한다.

맺음말

나는 극동 아시아에서 태어나 미국으로 건너왔다. 두 문화를 모두 경험하면서 어느 한 나라가 완벽하다고 생각하지는 않는다. 한국은 빠른 성장과 공동체 정신이라는 강점을 가지고 있고, 미국은 자유와 다양성, 그리고 끊임없는 도전 정신이라는 특별한 자산을 가지고 있다.

미국 독립 250주년은 단지 오래된 국가의 생일이 아니다. 그것은 자유와 기회의 가치를 다시 생각해 보는 시간이다. 이민자인 나에게 미국은 단순히 살아가는 장소가 아니라 새로운 꿈을 꾸게 해 준 나라였다.

앞으로의 250년에도 미국이 자유를 지키고, 다양성을 존중하며, 세계 곳곳에서 새로운 희망을 찾아오는 사람들에게 여전히 “기회의 나라”로 남기를 진심으로 기대한다.

He published 38 books with ‘Selected Readings in Cybersecurity’ (2018) (over 800 copies archived globally at university/college libraries around the world) and ‘Cybersecurity Applications and Artificial Intelligence’ (2023) available in seven major world languages. He proposed the world’s first global and universal telecommunications “Service Order Handling (SOH)” Model (T-SOH Model) (1995) with Dr. Adrian Tang. With this innovative research work, he received the IEEE NOMS ’96 Best Paper Award and became the first recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award of the TeleManagement Forum in 1998. His research areas include Natural Language Processing-focused AI, AI-applied cybersecurity, network and telecom service management, and Korean studies on Gani Choi Rip’s Jeonggwan (靜觀: Quiet Contemplation) philosophy and Shilhak ( 實學: Practical Learning).
