Reflections on Visiting San José State University (SJSU)

I had the opportunity to visit San José State University (SJSU) while attending an academic conference in California in June 2026. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, SJSU is widely recognized as one of the most influential public universities in the western United States. My visit revealed far more than a typical university campus. It was a place where history and innovation, humanities and technology, tradition and entrepreneurship coexist in remarkable harmony.

California’s First Public Institution of Higher Education

Founded in 1857, San José State University is the oldest public institution of higher education in California. It is considered the founding campus of what later became the California State University (CSU) system. From its humble beginnings as a teachers’ school, SJSU has grown into a comprehensive university with a strong reputation for teaching, research, and public service.

Located at the Center of Silicon Valley

One of SJSU’s greatest advantages is its location. Situated in downtown San José, the university lies at the center of Silicon Valley, the world’s leading hub of technological innovation. Major companies such as Google, Apple, NVIDIA, Adobe, and Cisco are located nearby, providing students with unparalleled access to internships, research collaborations, and career opportunities.

A Culture of Innovation and Entrepreneurship
