This success deserves admiration. Yet prosperity also requires reflection.
When Money Becomes the Measure of Everything
Economic growth naturally increases the importance of financial security. For earlier generations who experienced war and poverty, money represented safety, opportunity, and hope. Hard work and financial discipline became essential virtues.
However, as prosperity increased, wealth gradually became more than a means of improving life—it became a measure of personal worth.
Many young people now grow up believing that admission to elite universities, employment at prestigious companies, high salaries, luxury housing, and visible social status define success. Questions about occupation or income often receive greater attention than questions about values, character, or contribution.

The consequences of excessive materialism extend beyond economics.
Young people experience growing pressure to compete in education and employment. Mental health concerns, social isolation, and anxiety about housing affordability have become increasingly significant issues.
Relationships may also become more transactional when wealth becomes the principal measure of respect. Communities weaken when competition replaces cooperation and when success is defined only by financial outcomes.

현대사에서 대한민국만큼 극적인 변화를 이룬 나라는 드물다. 한국전쟁의 참혹한 폐허 속에서 출발한 대한민국은 불과 수십 년 만에 세계를 선도하는 경제 강국이자 기술 혁신국, 문화 강국으로 성장하였다. 흔히 ‘한강의 기적(The Korean Economic Miracle)’이라 불리는 이 놀라운 발전은 오늘날까지도 많은 개발도상국의 벤치마킹 대상이 되고 있으며, 비전과 인내, 교육, 그리고 국민적 단결이 만들어 낸 역사적 성공 사례로 평가받고 있다.
그러나 위대한 성공은 언제나 새로운 과제를 남긴다.
이제 한국 사회는 중요한 질문 앞에 서 있다.
“경제적 성공 이후, 우리는 어떤 나라를 만들어야 하는가?”

풍부한 천연자원을 가진 국가들과 달리 한국이 가진 가장 큰 자산은 사람이었다.
부모들은 자녀 교육을 위해 희생했고, 교사들은 미래 세대를 길러냈으며, 과학자와 기술자들은 새로운 기술을 개발했고, 기업가들은 세계 시장에 도전했다. 이러한 노력들이 모여 세계적인 반도체 산업, 자동차 산업, 조선 산업, 정보통신기술(ICT), 바이오 산업, 인공지능 기술을 발전시켰다.
오늘날 한국은 기술뿐 아니라 K-팝, 영화, 드라마, 문학, 음식 등 문화 콘텐츠를 통해 세계인의 사랑을 받는 문화 강국이 되었다.
이러한 성과는 충분히 자랑스러워야 한다.
그러나 번영은 우리에게 또 다른 성찰을 요구한다.

경제 발전 과정에서 돈의 중요성이 커지는 것은 자연스러운 일이다.
전쟁과 가난을 경험한 세대에게 돈은 생존이었고 희망이었다. 열심히 일하고 저축하며 가족을 부양하는 것은 가장 중요한 덕목이었다.
그러나 경제적 풍요가 커질수록 돈은 삶을 위한 수단이 아니라 사람의 가치를 평가하는 기준으로 변해 가기 시작했다.
오늘날 많은 젊은이들은 명문대 진학, 대기업 취업, 높은 연봉, 비싼 아파트, 사회적 지위를 성공의 절대 기준으로 받아들이는 경우가 적지 않다.
사람을 처음 만났을 때 직업과 연봉을 먼저 묻고, 그 사람의 인격과 삶의 철학은 뒤로 미루는 문화도 점차 익숙해지고 있다.
물론 이러한 현상은 한국만의 문제가 아니다. 세계 여러 경쟁 사회에서도 비슷한 모습을 볼 수 있다.
그러나 한국의 빠른 경제 성장과 치열한 경쟁 문화는 이러한 경향을 더욱 뚜렷하게 만들었다.
경제적 성취만으로 사람을 평가하는 사회는 결국 지혜, 정직, 배려, 창의성, 봉사 정신과 같은 문명의 핵심 가치를 놓치게 된다.

인간 중심 사회는 다양한 형태의 성공을 존중한다.
새로운 지식을 발견하는 과학자
미래 세대를 키우는 교사
사회 문제를 해결하는 기업가
문화를 풍요롭게 만드는 예술가
생명을 지키는 의료인

이들의 기여는 단순히 경제적 가치만으로는 결코 평가할 수 없다.

인공지능 시대의 리더십

두 번째 한국의 기적은 기술 발전과 인간의 가치가 서로 대립하는 것이 아니라 함께 발전할 수 있음을 보여주는 것이어야 한다.

Young B. Choi is a Professor in the Department of Engineering & Computer Science at Regent University. He published 38 books with ‘Selected Readings in Cybersecurity’ (2018) (over 800 copies archived globally at university/college libraries around the world) and ‘Cybersecurity Applications and Artificial Intelligence’ (2023) available in seven major world languages. He proposed the world’s first global and universal telecommunications “Service Order Handling (SOH)” Model (T-SOH Model) (1995) with Dr. Adrian Tang. With this innovative research work, he received the IEEE NOMS ’96 Best Paper Award and became the first recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award of the TeleManagement Forum in 1998. His research areas include Natural Language Processing-focused AI, AI-applied cybersecurity, network and telecom service management, and Korean studies on Gani Choi Rip’s Jeonggwan (靜觀: Quiet Contemplation) philosophy and Shilhak ( 實學: Practical Learning).
