As I read Songdorok in Volume 7 of The Gani-jip, I was struck by the realization that a city, much like a person, possesses its own memories, character, and history. Choi Rip did not regard Songdo (present-day Gaeseong) as merely another destination on his journey. Instead, he carefully observed its mountains, rivers, streets, historic buildings, and the lives of the people who had shaped its rich heritage. As a result, Songdorok is far more than a travel account; it is a thoughtful reflection on the meaning of history, culture, and human life.

Today, when we visit a new city, we often search first for famous landmarks, popular restaurants, or modern attractions. Choi Rip, however, looked beyond outward appearances. He was far more interested in the city’s historical legacy, cultural traditions, and the stories of the people who had lived there. His perspective transformed travel from simple sightseeing into an opportunity for learning and personal enrichment.

One aspect that impressed me most was his attitude toward history. As he contemplated ancient walls, palaces, and historical sites, he did not dwell merely on past glory. Instead, he quietly acknowledged that even the most prosperous eras eventually fade, and that power, wealth, and worldly success are never permanent. This thoughtful perspective offers an important lesson for modern readers. No matter how rapidly society advances, we cannot build a meaningful future if we forget the lessons of the past.

Songdorok also deepened my appreciation for cultural heritage. Historic buildings and ancient ruins are far more than collections of stone and wood; they preserve the dreams, achievements, and aspirations of countless generations. Choi Rip respected these enduring traces of history and regarded them as bridges connecting the past with the present. His reflections inspired me to recognize my own responsibility to preserve and cherish cultural heritage for future generations.

Perhaps the most moving aspect of this work is its invitation to reflect on the present through the lens of the past. As Choi Rip remembered those who had lived before him, he also examined his own life. His journey demonstrates that travel is not only about discovering new places but also about renewing one’s perspective and deepening one’s understanding of oneself. Ultimately, what matters most is not where we travel, but what we learn along the way.

After reading Songdorok, I found myself looking at cities differently. Rather than being captivated only by impressive skyscrapers or bustling streets, I now want to appreciate the stories, traditions, and historical memories that give each city its unique identity. Even a quiet alleyway can preserve centuries of history, and every cultural landmark carries the spirit of those who came before us.

Songdorok is much more than a record of a journey through an ancient city. It is a timeless classic that encourages readers to reflect on history, culture, and the enduring values of human life. As Choi Rip walked through Songdo, he encountered the past; as we read his words today, we are invited to examine our own lives with greater wisdom and gratitude. More than four hundred years after it was written, Songdorok continues to remind us that understanding history enriches the present and helps us build a better future. +++

『간이집』 제7권 「송도록」을 읽으며 가장 먼저 느낀 것은 한 도시에도 사람처럼 기억과 역사가 살아 숨 쉰다는 사실이었다. 최립은 송도(개성)를 단순히 지나가는 여행지로 바라보지 않았다. 그는 그곳의 산과 강, 거리와 옛 건물, 그리고 그 속에 담긴 역사와 사람들의 삶을 함께 바라보았다. 그래서 「송도록」은 단순한 기행문이 아니라, 한 도시의 과거와 현재를 통해 삶의 의미를 생각하게 하는 깊은 기록으로 다가왔다.

오늘날 우리는 새로운 도시를 방문하면 유명한 관광지나 맛집부터 찾는 경우가 많다. 하지만 최립은 화려한 겉모습보다 그 도시가 품고 있는 역사와 문화, 그리고 그곳에서 살아간 사람들의 발자취에 더 큰 관심을 기울였다. 그의 시선은 여행을 단순한 구경이 아니라 배우는 과정으로 만들었다.

이 작품에서 가장 감동적인 부분은 과거를 통해 현재를 돌아보는 자세이다. 최립은 옛사람들의 삶을 떠올리며 자신의 삶도 함께 돌아보았다. 여행은 새로운 장소를 만나는 일인 동시에 자신의 마음을 새롭게 하는 과정이라는 사실을 그는 조용히 보여 준다. 결국 사람은 어디를 가느냐보다 무엇을 배우느냐가 더 중요하다는 것을 깨닫게 된다.

『송도록』을 읽고 나니 도시를 바라보는 눈이 달라졌다. 이제는 높은 건물이나 화려한 거리보다 그 도시가 간직한 역사와 사람들의 이야기에 더 귀를 기울이고 싶어졌다. 오래된 골목 하나에도 수많은 세월이 담겨 있으며, 작은 문화유산 하나에도 한 시대의 정신이 살아 있다는 사실을 잊지 말아야겠다는 생각이 들었다.

『간이집』 제7권 「송도록」은 한 도시를 기록한 여행기가 아니라 역사와 문화, 그리고 인간의 삶을 함께 성찰하게 하는 귀중한 고전이다. 최립은 송도를 걸으며 과거를 만났고, 우리는 그의 글을 읽으며 오늘의 삶을 돌아보게 된다. 그래서 이 작품은 수백 년이 지난 지금도 여전히 우리에게 역사를 사랑하고 현재를 더욱 의미 있게 살아가라는 소중한 메시지를 전해 주고 있다. +++

Young B. Choi is a Professor in the Department of Engineering & Computer Science at Regent University. He published 38 books with ‘Selected Readings in Cybersecurity’ (2018) (over 800 copies archived globally at university/college libraries around the world) and ‘Cybersecurity Applications and Artificial Intelligence’ (2023) available in seven major world languages. He proposed the world’s first global and universal telecommunications “Service Order Handling (SOH)” Model (T-SOH Model) (1995) with Dr. Adrian Tang. With this innovative research work, he received the IEEE NOMS ’96 Best Paper Award and became the first recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award of the TeleManagement Forum in 1998. His research areas include Natural Language Processing-focused AI, AI-applied cybersecurity, network and telecom service management, and Korean studies on Gani Choi Rip’s Jeonggwan (靜觀: Quiet Contemplation) philosophy and Shilhak ( 實學: Practical Learning).
