Peace (平和) — The Aesthetics of Harmony Within Strength

This work expresses one of humanity’s most cherished ideals through the two characters “Peace” (平和). Peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it is a dynamic state in which different forces, values, and perspectives coexist in balance and harmony. Through the language of calligraphy, the artist transforms this profound concept into a visual meditation.

The first character, 平 (Pyeong, Peace/Equilibrium), is dominated by a broad and stable horizontal stroke that stretches confidently across the composition. Like a distant horizon embracing the earth, it conveys balance, stability, and inclusiveness. The strong vertical stroke descending through the center suggests unwavering principles and moral integrity, reminding us that genuine peace is not founded on weakness or compromise, but on a firm commitment to justice and order.

The second character, 和 (Hwa, Harmony), introduces a more fluid and organic structure. The left component, 禾, symbolizes growth, nourishment, and the abundance of nature, while the right component, 口, signifies communication and human interaction. Their union within a single character reflects the truth that peace is achieved not through silence or uniformity, but through dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect.

The brushwork is bold and decisive, yet never harsh. Variations in pressure and speed create a rhythm that balances strength with gentleness, embodying a distinctly East Asian aesthetic sensibility. The subtle traces of dry-brush texture (flying white, 飛白) reveal the living movement of the brush and remind us that peace is not a static condition but an ongoing process requiring continual care and cultivation.

The generous use of negative space is equally significant. The open areas surrounding the characters create a realm of stillness and contemplation, suggesting that peace begins not only in society but also within the human heart. This spaciousness lends the work a meditative depth, inviting viewers to pause and reflect upon their own inner lives.

Ultimately, “Peace” (平和) transcends political slogans and social declarations. It becomes a philosophical reflection on the human condition—a visual meditation on how individuals, communities, and nature may coexist in harmony. The work speaks not only to the world around us but also to the quiet landscape within.

Artist’s Statement

Peace (平和) — The Strongest Form of Strength

I do not think of peace as mere gentleness. To me, true peace is the strongest form of strength, forged through the experience of conflict, struggle, and reconciliation.

This work, “Peace” (平和), emerged from that conviction. As I began the first stroke, I reflected on balance; as I completed the final stroke, I contemplated harmony. Peace is not the triumph of one side over another, but the wisdom to acknowledge differences and live together in mutual respect.

The character 平 represents the centered mind—a state of inner equilibrium that remains steady amid the uncertainties of life. The character 和 symbolizes the beauty of relationships, a condition in which different voices maintain their uniqueness while contributing to a greater harmony.

In this work, I sought to reveal essence rather than technique. The bold and simplified strokes express the enduring strength of peace, while the generous empty spaces represent the contemplative silence from which understanding emerges.

We live in an age of rapid change and increasing complexity. Yet authentic peace does not arrive from external circumstances alone. It begins with the discipline of self-reflection and the willingness to understand others. In this sense, peace is both a global aspiration and a deeply personal responsibility.

I hope that those who encounter this work will pause for a moment and look inward. Before speaking of peace in the world, may they first cultivate peace within their own hearts.

Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is the presence of understanding, the practice of harmony, and the music of coexistence.

「平和(평화)」 — 강인함 속에 깃든 조화의 미학

이 작품은 단 두 글자, 「平和」(평화)를 통해 인간이 오랫동안 추구해 온 가장 보편적이면서도 가장 어려운 이상을 표현한다. 평화는 단순히 갈등이 없는 상태가 아니다. 그것은 서로 다른 힘과 가치가 균형을 이루며 공존하는 역동적 조화의 상태이다. 이 작품은 바로 그 긴장과 균형의 미묘한 관계를 서예적 언어로 풀어내고 있다.

첫 글자 「平」은 넓고 안정적인 횡획이 화면 전체를 지배한다. 마치 대지를 가로지르는 지평선처럼 펼쳐진 선은 균형과 안정, 그리고 포용의 정신을 상징한다. 중앙에서 아래로 내리꽂는 수직선은 흔들림 없는 원칙과 정의를 암시하며, 평화가 결코 나약한 타협이 아니라 굳건한 질서 위에서 성립함을 보여준다.

이어지는 「和」는 구조적으로 더욱 유기적이고 부드럽다. 좌측의 「禾」는 자연의 성장과 풍요를 상징하고, 우측의 「口」는 사람들 사이의 대화와 소통을 의미한다. 두 요소가 하나의 글자 안에서 결합하는 모습은 평화가 자연스럽게 주어지는 것이 아니라 이해와 공감, 그리고 끊임없는 소통을 통해 이루어진다는 사실을 암시한다.

필획은 굵고 대담하지만 거칠지 않다. 붓의 압력과 속도 변화가 만들어낸 리듬은 강인함과 부드러움이 공존하는 동양적 미학을 보여준다. 특히 획의 끝에서 드러나는 비백(飛白)은 완벽함보다 살아 있는 숨결을 전달하며, 평화 또한 고정된 상태가 아니라 끊임없이 만들어 가야 할 과정임을 상기시킨다.

여백의 사용 역시 인상적이다. 글자 주위의 넓은 공간은 침묵과 사유의 영역을 형성하며, 평화가 외적인 환경뿐 아니라 인간 내면의 고요함에서 시작됨을 암시한다. 이러한 여백은 작품에 명상적 깊이를 부여하며 관람자가 자신의 삶을 돌아보도록 이끈다.

결국 「平和」는 정치적 구호나 사회적 선언을 넘어선다. 그것은 인간 존재의 근원적 과제에 대한 성찰이며, 자신과 타인, 자연과 사회가 조화를 이루는 삶에 대한 시각적 명상이다.

平和 — 가장 강한 힘

나는 평화를 부드러움으로만 생각하지 않는다. 진정한 평화는 수많은 갈등과 혼란을 통과한 뒤에 얻어지는 가장 강한 힘이라고 믿는다.

이 작품 「平和」는 그러한 생각에서 시작되었다. 첫 획을 내리며 나는 균형을 생각했고, 마지막 획을 마치며 조화를 생각했다. 평화는 어느 한쪽의 승리가 아니라 서로 다름을 인정하고 함께 살아가는 지혜이기 때문이다.

‘平’은 마음의 중심을 의미한다. 흔들리는 세상 속에서도 자신을 잃지 않는 내면의 평정심이다. ‘和’는 관계의 아름다움이다. 서로 다른 사람들이 각자의 소리를 내면서도 하나의 화음을 이루는 상태이다.

나는 이 작품에서 복잡한 기교보다 본질을 드러내고자 했다. 굵고 단순한 획은 평화의 단단함을 표현하고, 넓은 여백은 침묵 속에서 피어나는 성찰의 공간을 의미한다.

오늘날 우리는 빠르게 변화하는 시대를 살아간다. 그러나 진정한 평화는 바깥에서 오는 것이 아니라 스스로를 다스리고 타인을 이해하려는 마음에서 시작된다. 그래서 평화는 세계의 문제인 동시에 개인의 문제이기도 하다.

이 작품을 바라보는 이들이 잠시 걸음을 멈추고 자신의 내면을 들여다보기를 바란다. 그리고 세상에 평화를 말하기 전에 먼저 마음속에 평화를 심는 시간을 가질 수 있기를 희망한다.

평화는 전쟁의 부재가 아니라 이해의 존재이며, 침묵이 아니라 조화로운 공존의 음악이다.
