Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the articles contributed by the author to KAUPA Letters over a period spanning from 2019 to 2026. The objective is to identify which essays were most appealing to readers and to derive insights for future article composition. Metrics used for the analysis include total downloads, daily average downloads, and PlumX metrics such as abstract views. The main readership comprises Korean American professors in the United States, Canada, and Korea. The results indicate a clear preference for book reviews and articles addressing contemporary academic challenges. Recommendations for future contributions are provided based on data-driven insights.
Keywords: KAUPA Letters, academic readership, article downloads, PlumX metrics, essay analysis, research trends, Korean American professors
Introduction
The dissemination of academic knowledge through professional newsletters and journals is critical for engaging the scholarly community. KAUPA Letters, the publication of the Korean American University Professors Association (KAUPA), serves as a primary platform for Korean American professors to share essays and research insights. Over the period of 2019–2026, the author contributed a total of 48 essays. These contributions span various themes, including creativity, academic publishing, philosophy, literature, and technology.
The present study analyzes the readership appeal of these articles using two key metrics: the number of downloads recorded via Purdue University Library archives and PlumX metrics, which provide additional insights such as abstract views and engagement. By understanding which topics resonate most with readers, this study aims to inform future article composition strategies.
Methodology
Data Collection
All essays authored by the researcher were compiled into two datasets: 48 essays. Download data and PlumX metrics were obtained from the Purdue University Library archival system. The period of analysis spans 76 days from January 22 to April 8, 2026.
Metrics
Two primary metrics were utilized:
1. Total downloads: The cumulative number of times an article was downloaded.
2. Daily average downloads: Calculated as total downloads divided by the number of days in the period (76 days) and PlumX metrics: These include abstract views, which provide supplementary insight into reader interest.
Analytical Approach
The top 9 most popular essays were identified based on total downloads. Average downloads per day and per article were calculated to provide a normalized comparison. For research papers, download counts and PlumX metrics were similarly analyzed. Data were visualized in tabular form and interpreted to identify patterns in readership preference.
Results
Critical Essay Analysis
The top 9 essays in terms of total downloads are summarized in Table 1. The most downloaded article was A Book Review: Pachinko, with 41 downloads (0.54 downloads per day) and 35 PlumX download counts. Overall, 230 downloads were recorded across nine high-performing essays, yielding an average of 2.95 downloads per day or 0.33 downloads per paper per day.

9 A Book Review of The Grapes of Wrath Generated by ChatGPT 16 / 0.21 Downloads: 12, Abstract Views: 5
These results indicate a strong preference for book reviews and reflective essays on academic experiences, highlighting the readership’s interest in literary critique and practical academic guidance.
Discussion
The analysis reveals several patterns:
1. High engagement with book reviews: Readers favor articles that provide critical insights into literature, both Western and Korean, suggesting that future contributions should include more book reviews or comparative literary studies.
2. Interest in academic and technological guidance: Essays addressing challenges in academic publishing and emerging AI trends have significant readership, indicating a need for practical, data-driven discussions.
3. Cross-disciplinary appeal: Articles that blend arts, literature, technology, and pedagogy receive considerable attention, highlighting the value of interdisciplinary contributions for this audience.
The data support a strategy for future article composition: balancing reflective essays, book reviews, and applied research in technology and education to maximize readership engagement.
Conclusion
This study analyzed the impact of 48 critical essays authored for KAUPA Letters using download statistics and PlumX metrics. Insights from this analysis suggest a sustained reader interest in book reviews, academic guidance, and interdisciplinary applications of technology. Future contributions can leverage these insights to enhance readership and academic influence among Korean American professors in the U.S., Canada, and Korea.
