A clerk from Danyang County was hurrying to Chungju to deliver an official document, carrying his dispatch case upon his head. When he reached Janghoe-won (長會院), he noticed three tiger cubs by the roadside. Taking the staff he carried in his hand, he struck them and killed them all.
Not long afterward, the mother tiger came charging toward him with fierce roars. In panic, the clerk scrambled up a tall tree to save himself. The tiger stared up at him as though realizing there was nothing she could do, then left and disappeared somewhere into the wilderness.
The clerk untied his belt and fastened himself securely to the tree so that he would not fall. After waiting there for quite some time, he saw the tiger return, this time leading a leopard.
The reason was clear enough. The leopard, being smaller and more agile, was adept at climbing trees. Even a tiger, ferocious beyond measure, apparently needed the assistance of another beast.
For the clerk, the greatest concern in his present predicament was the leopard’s approach. He therefore removed his trousers, folded the two legs neatly together, and when the leopard came near, thrust the trousers deeply over its head and pushed it downward from the tree.
The tiger immediately assumed that the object falling from above, wrapped in cloth, was the man himself. Acting on that belief alone, she tore it to pieces in a frenzy and killed it. But when she looked more closely, she found that the man still remained motionless in the tree, while the leopard had died in his place. The tiger then wandered aimlessly around the tree for a long while, let out another mighty roar, and finally disappeared into the mountain valley.
By then dawn had broken. The clerk climbed down from the tree, skinned the four beasts, and arrived in Chungju carrying their hides. When the district inspector (sunbaek, 巡伯) reproached him for his tardiness and sought to punish him for negligence, the clerk explained the circumstances and presented the hides as evidence. Thus, he escaped punishment.
There is an old saying:
“If one does not enter the tiger’s den, how can one obtain a tiger cub?”
Yet in this case, the man acquired tiger cubs without entering the tiger’s den at all. What extraordinary good fortune that was!
As for the leopard, however, trusting too much in its own abilities, it recklessly accepted the tiger’s command and was ultimately killed. Such a fate may rightly be called a disaster brought upon itself. +++
