The character yeok (逆), ‘to go against,’ holds various meanings. When used as a prefix, it indicates the reverse or opposite of a word’s original meaning, as in “counterproductive effect” or “counterpropaganda.” We frequently use words that appear contradictory and irrational on the surface but contain the truth within. In life, there are many times when we must do things in reverse order and it brings about better results.
Headstand is an exercise I have been practicing for decades. It is a highly advanced workout that improves balance, sharpens movement, and strengthens nervous system. Blood rushes to the head and clears the mind. It allows internal organs which have been suppressed their entire life to experience the sensation of being up. Objects look different when viewed upside down.
Worried that my body might lose its balance and I might look funny in my later years, I made it sure intentionally to move my left side more. I am a typical right-hander so much so that I even received a warning from a dentist. I also leave most of my right hand’s work to my left hand. If I do this well, I might naturally be able to walk the path of inaction, which is under the purview of the right brain.
It is often said that a poet is a liar who always speaks the truth. This implies that poetry is a linguistic art that uses the technique of telling the truth through lies. In our daily lives, we engage in paradoxical behavior and use paradoxes without hesitation. We protest silently, let out joyful screams, and listen to silent outcries. These are interesting expressions found in our Korean language.
I like jokes. Humor akin to looking through a telescope upside down is one way to view reality coolly without mixing in subjectivity. While most humor is fictional, there are many that awaken the brain cells. It can be surprising, yet also very serious. Jokes that are entertaining and contain profound insights into human affairs captivate me. There are so many falsehoods among the societal conventions we believe to be the truth that they can be harmful to our health if not blown away by laughter.
Many things we encounter without thinking are created using reverse techniques. Scenes of jumping up to high places are reverse motion effects created by filming a jump from a high place and then printing it in reverse. We use reverse osmosis to convert seawater into fresh water and produce eco-friendly energy. Since one may be punished instead for praying to gods for things that defy reason, one must be careful not to do such things even in a dream.
My favorite form of walking is backward walking. Walking backward is beneficial to the body because it engages different muscles from those used when walking forward. It also helps older adults maintain their balance. When marching long distances carrying heavy loads, the big toe blisters. The pressure on the toe must be reduced before blisters form, and walking backward is the solution. For walking meditation, stand upright and fix your gaze 3 to 4 meters ahead of your toes. Since lowering your head causes fatigue, keep your chin upright. Hold your hands together in front or behind you to prevent them from shaking, and walk slowly and naturally, focusing on the movement and sensation of each step. I incorporate walking backward into this meditation and devote my heart to it.
Brain functions are divided into the left and right hemispheres. The left hemisphere is involved in reason and logic, while the right hemisphere is responsible for expression and intuition. Yoga, an ancient Indian religious practice, includes an exercise that closely links the two hemispheres to achieve balance. This breathing technique, called Pranayama, involves sitting in a quiet place and exhaling and inhaling for 5 minutes while alternately blocking both nostrils with your thumb and middle finger. The breathing should be natural, but the exhale must always come first, and it should be slightly slow and deep. This exercise in the morning regularizes your breathing throughout the day, calms the nervous system, and brings peace to the mind. Unlike the breathing you do in your daily routine, this type of breathing is beneficial to both the body and the mind.
Although my body passed its halfway point and is now in decline, there is no reason why I cannot practice things in reverse order that do not go against the principles of nature. For the remainder of my life, I wish to live by questioning what I once took for granted and overturning the knowledge I have accumulated throughout my life with my imagination. As the proverb says, it is better to live in a world where one is hung upside down. Since the reflections of objects are often more enchanting, I intend to live like Kim sat-gat, a famous wandering and satirical poet of the late Joseon dynasty in Korea, known for wearing a traditional bamboo rain hat (satgat) as an act of penance.
A bowl of porridge on a square pine table
The shadows of the sky, mountains, and clouds drift together
The master of the house, do not feel ashamed by any chance
I like the green mountains reflected upside down in the water
