Dr. Sung-Kwon Kang spent five decades answering one question: how does matter, pushed hard enough, hold together? The path ran from a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering at Seoul National University (1969) to a Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania (1973), through faculty posts at Nova Scotia Technical University and Stevens Institute of Technology, and into 34 years as a Senior Research Scientist at IBM’s T. J. Watson Research Center.

There, his work on lead-free solders helped reshape microelectronics packaging worldwide, a shift that touched nearly every circuit board on earth. Few careers in materials science carry this weight of record:

That honor sits at the center of a body of work most engineers spend a career chasing and few achieve. Yet it is not what Kang chose to write about.

Joy of Learning and Sharing, published this spring, is less a record of achievement than an argument about what achievement is for. Kang writes as a scientist who solved problems that mattered to millions of strangers, and who now wants to talk about something smaller and more durable: the pleasure of understanding, and the deeper pleasure of passing it on. The memoir moves between postwar Korea, graduate study in Philadelphia, IBM’s research floors, and the family and community life running alongside it all, including his long service to Korean-American communities. It reads less like a curriculum vitae than a long letter to students, children, and grandchildren, written by someone who has had the time to decide what actually mattered.

Read alongside the KBS ceremony footage, the book becomes something more than memoir. It is the interior account of a career the world already recognized from the outside.

강성권 박사는 오십 년 동안 하나의 질문에 답해왔다. 물질은 극한까지 밀어붙였을 때 어떻게 형태를 유지하는가. 그 여정은 서울대학교 금속공학과 학사(1969년)에서 시작해 펜실베이니아대학교 재료공학 박사(1973년)로 이어졌고, 노바스코샤 공과대학교와 스티븐스 공과대학교 교수직을 거쳐 IBM 왓슨 연구소에서 34년간 수석연구원으로 재직하는 과정으로 이어졌다.

그곳에서 그가 수행한 무연 솔더 연구는 전 세계 마이크로전자 패키징 산업의 판도를 바꾸어 놓았다. 지구상 거의 모든 회로기판에 그 영향이 닿을 만큼 큰 전환이었다. 재료공학 분야에서 이만한 무게를 지닌 경력은 흔치 않다.

이 영예는 대다수의 엔지니어가 평생을 좇지만 좀처럼 도달하지 못하는 경력의 정점에 자리한다. 그러나 강 박사가 책으로 남기고자 한 것은 바로 그 지점이 아니었다.
