Executive Summary
Many K-GSP members carry well-formed ideas that never reach readers, often because starting feels harder than it should. This announcement invites members to write for the Expert Opinion column and introduces the K-GSP Forum Original Article Template and its companion guide. It explains what the column publishes, walks through each template section, and answers common worries about time, length, sources, and AI use. The takeaway is simple: one clear idea is enough to begin.

1. The Idea You Mentioned Over Coffee
Most of us have had this moment. Over coffee, after a seminar, or in a long email thread, a colleague says something sharp about their field, and someone replies, “You should write that down.” Then the semester moves on, and the idea stays in the conversation where it started.
The K-GSP Forum exists to catch those ideas. Our readers are Korean diaspora scholars, professionals, and practitioners who want writing that connects careful thinking to real work. A good column can begin with exactly that kind of remark.
This post is an invitation and a practical guide. If you have an informed view on a question in your field, the Expert Opinion column is the right place for it, and the new K-GSP Substack template is designed to make the first draft easier to write, not harder.
2. How the Expert Opinion Column Works
The sections below cover three practical questions: what kind of writing belongs in Expert Opinion, how the template turns an idea into a finished article, and what to do about the worries that usually keep good writers from starting.
2.1 What Belongs in Expert Opinion
Since the website restructuring on September 29, 2026, the Forum has organized its work into five core categories: Announcements, Book & Movie Review, Expert Opinion, Research, and Storytelling. Expert Opinion is the home for essays and emerging ideas. It is less formal than Research, which carries more scholarly apparatus, but it is still grounded in evidence and in the author’s experience.
Our contributor guide describes an Expert Opinion piece as “a clearly argued, evidence-grounded perspective on a timely or contested issue” (K-GSP Forum, 2026). That description is a good test. A strong column usually answers three questions. What is the problem? Why does it matter now? What do you, from your discipline or profession, see that others might miss?
Good topics are often closer than you think. A policy change in your sector, a pattern you have watched across years of teaching or consulting, a book that changed how you read your field, or a lesson from working between Korean and American institutions can all become strong columns. The vantage point you bring as a diaspora scholar or professional is part of what readers come for. You do not need to have the final word. You need a clear position, honest evidence, and a willingness to say where the evidence stops.
2.2 Walking Through the Template
The K-GSP Forum Original Article Template gives every article the same reliable shape, and its companion Template Guide explains what goes in each part. You can fill it in from top to bottom.
Begin with one section label, here EXPERT OPINION, then a specific title and your author line. Next comes an Executive Summary of about 75 words that names the problem, your argument, your evidence, and the takeaway, followed by five lowercase keywords.
The body has a target of about 1,000 words. The opening (about 150 words) starts with a concrete observation, a short scene, or a focused question, and then states your thesis. The main argument (about 650 words) opens with a short introduction and then develops three supporting points of about 200 words each. The third point is a good place for the strongest objection or the limits of your argument. The closing (about 200 words) restates your thesis in fresh language and leaves the reader with something to think about.
After the body come References in APA 7 style, About the Author, Suggested Citation, a Korean summary (한글요약) of about 150 to 300 words, and the K-GSP copyright notice as the final line. On Substack, please number the body headings (1., 2., 2.1, 2.2, 3.), because Substack does not reliably display APA heading styles.
2.3 Common Worries, and Honest Answers
“I do not have time for a long piece.” The template’s 1,000-word body sits at the lower end of the 800 to 2,500 words our contributor guide allows for Expert Opinion (K-GSP Forum, 2026). Once the template gives you an outline, a first draft can come together in a sitting or two.
“A template will make my writing sound the same as everyone else’s.” The template fixes the order of the sections, not your voice. Your opening, your examples, and your judgment remain yours. The structure mainly helps readers find their way, and it helps editors give faster, clearer feedback.
“What about sources and AI tools?” Cite only sources you have checked, use APA 7, and never invent data, quotations, or references. Our Terms of Service allow AI-assisted writing, but the work must reflect your own thinking, and substantial AI use should be disclosed to the Editor-in-Coordination.
“I am not sure my topic fits.” Send a short note before you draft. Editors would much rather help shape an idea early than see it go unwritten. Writing regularly also matters for the future: Resident Columnists receive their own homepage sections, and new columnists are added as members reach 30 quality articles on the Forum.
3. One Paragraph Is Enough to Begin
The Expert Opinion column works best when it sounds like a knowledgeable colleague thinking out loud with care. The template does not ask you to become a different writer. It asks you to put one clear idea in an order readers can follow, support it with evidence you trust, and be honest about its limits.
When your draft is ready, follow the steps in How to Publish Your Article on K-GSP Forum Substack (K-GSP Forum, 2026). Log in to kgsp.substack.com with your invited email, create a new article, and paste in your text. Add at least one relevant image, a third-person author bio of three to five sentences, and the copyright notice. Before you send it, select the Expert Opinion tag so the article appears in the right section of the site.
If you are unsure where to start, write the Executive Summary first. Seventy-five words that name your problem and your position will tell you whether the article is ready to grow. Most of the time, it is. The idea you mentioned over coffee deserves more readers than the people at that table, and the Forum is ready for it.
